A New Year’s Toast to You!

101_0735Here's a toast to the future, A toast to the past, And a toast to our friends, far and near. May the future be pleasant; The past a bright dream; May our friends remain faithful and dear. ~ Anonymous

One of the healthiest things you can do to bring in your New Year is have glass of wine. For more reasons read:  Over a Dozen Reasons to Drink to Better Health. The four most recommended wines for health benefits are:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  •  Petite Sauvignon
  •  Petite Sirah
  •  Merlot
But it not recommended to over indulge. Please consult your health care physician to discuss the benefits of a glass of wine.

This post linked to Shadow Shot Sunday and here is a shadow quote to top it all off:

Manners are like the shadows of virtues, they are the momentary display of those qualities which our fellow creatures love and respect. ~ Sydney Smith

Classic Cloud Revue

Gray clouds

clouds reach up
clouds merge quickly
then scatter 'round
fluffy white clouds
clouds of gray
proudly perched high
in a full array
humongous giant clouds
wispy little ones too
dancing cross the sky
in a classic cloud revue

Be the One who Cares!

A former classmate sent me this email the other day. It's called the Charles Schultz (the creator of the Peanuts comic strip)  phillosphy.
(I originally published this on 12/22/2010 and was doing some blog cleaning and thought I would revamp it and bring it back. I hope you don't mind. )

It consists of a quick quiz to help us stop and think:

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heismann trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers.
They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies... Awards tarnish...Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

The lesson:

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials ... the most money ... or the most awards.

They simply are the ones who care the most. Remember and appreciate those who have made a difference in your life, and return the favor by doing/being something special for someone else.''Be Yourself. Everyone Else Is Taken!"

To learn more about Charles Schultz click the link below the illustration. He was truly a fascinating and talented individual. His first strip was published in 1950. He passed away Feb. 12, 2000, and you can still find his comics in many syndicated columns.

My questions are:

1) Who is/are the most important person/people to you?

2) Why?

Now let them know. :-)!!  Everyone likes to be appreciated and recognized and they shouldn't have to win the Nobel Peace prize for us to appreciate them!! Let them know you as "the one who cares!"

Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas. If you have the time join us in  Two Questions Thursday. This is such a great way to get to know one another. Thanks Self Sagacity for hosting this!THIS

Grandma, not the same one, has a meme called succinctly yours. You use her photo and come up with a story of 140 words/characters or less. She also offers an extra challenge of a bonus word. This week it's "reproach."  It’s great fun. How low can you go?

Treatment for a Stagnate Liver

Motor boat on the lake

This is a continuation of the article A Pint of Prevention - A Pound of Cure; and will be part of a series about liver protection.  It is also linked to Weekend Reflection. Hope to see you there. :-)

Our liver has a huge job in keeping us healthy. It sits underneath the rib cage in two sections called the right and left lobe. Directly under it you will find the gallbladder along with the pancreas and intestines. They all work together to digest and process food.

Blood is filtered  through the liver before passing through the rest of the body. It detoxifies chemicals and helps the body to properly use medical prescriptions. Bile is secreted into the intestines from the liver. The liver's main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs while making proteins which are important for body functions. As it metabolizes drugs, the liver secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines.

The liver also breaks down hormones like adrenalin, aldosterone, estrogen and insulin after they have performed their functions. It helps to regulate the thyroid. Excess fat is stored in the liver and then transported to other parts of the body. It also converts sugars to energy, so you can understand why an overburdened liver can decrease overall body functions.

An unhealthy overburdened liver leaves one feeling tired and run down and more susceptible to illnesses. The body cannot survive if the liver fails to function

Assailants of our immune system can be toxins we may come in contact with daily:

  • Chemical fumes and formaldehyde in our new car coming from the new upholstery.
  • Fire retardants in our new mattress.
  • The chemicals found in our freshly dry cleaned garments.
  • Pesticides sprayed on our lawns, and that of the neighbors.
  • Metals and plastics in dental materials.
  • Petrochemicals found perfumes, dyes, plastics and synthetic rubbers.
  • Chlorine found in the swimming pool.
  • Molds and fungi found in air conditioning systems and heating systems in home.
This list may not include all of the problematic toxins but it does include many of them.

The four basic reasons for improper liver function are:

  • Toxins, such as those listed above.
  • A poor diet containing processed foods, white sugar, imitation foods, foods loaded with carbs and fats, junk foods, refined flours
  • Overeating which leads to an overworked liver.
  • Drugs, alcohol and caffeine, especially when in excess.

Feed your body right and aid  your liver health.

Our liver will function better with proper nutrition such as foods rich in bioflavonoids and flavonoids, which is why red wine (in moderation) is beneficial to liver health. Flavonoids act as antioxidants preventing damage to the body from free radicals.

Don't forget to eat your rainbow.

Colorful fruits and vegetables contain more flavonoids, bio-flavonoids and quercitin so are highly recommended to improve our overall health and will benefit heart and liver health in particular. Be sure to get your recommended daily dose of vitamin C and enjoy some of the following foods daily:
  • Tea (both green and black)
  • Dark chocolate
  • Cranberries
  • Grapes
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Garlic
  • Walnuts
  • Artichokes
  • Cherries
  • Coffee
Liver conditions to watch for:
  • Cirrhosis
  • Hepatitis
  • Ascites
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Liver cancer
  • Liver failure
  • Gallstones
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • Primary biliary cirrhosis
Get lots of water daily.

Get plenty of fluids always taking supplements with a full glass of steam distilled water. Keeping our kidneys flushed and working properly has a direct impact on our liver health. Avoid foods that constipate. Perform a 3 day juice fast once every 30 days. Enjoy a glass of water each morning with lemon juice.

Increase your potassium by adding bananas, almonds, blackstrap molasses, brewer's yeast, dulse, kelp, prunes, raisins, rice, wheat bran and seeds. Do not take more than 10,000 i.u.s of vitamin A daily, avoid cod liver oil and do not take more than 1,500 mgs. of niacin a day. The correct balance is important to the proper function of your internal organs.

For more information about these conditions and the testing to diagnose them consult WebMD and/or your family physician. If you have any concerns about your liver please see your health care provider.

We need our wits about us.

My oldest son, mom, her cock-a-poo, me, my great grand, & her mother.

Life requires that we have our wits about us.

You may think I have an over active imagination, being a writer and all, but many of the things I find myself concerned with are real concerns; things that have actually happened to me, or someone I know. Living in the Bronx River projects in NYC I encountered many harrowing experiences,

Red clover: To take or not?

Red clover

Red clover is a herb with a lot of controversy swirling around it regarding many  health benefits along with a few warnings  regarding side effects. I researched and represented information on both sides so you can decide in my article Should we be taking red clover?

Another fascinating herb that is honored which begins with the letter "R" is rosemary. To learn why you should be cooking more with rosemary read The many health benefits of rosemary. Rosemary helps one to remember and is reported to:

  • fight depression,
  • regulate menstrual cycles
  • revive fainting victims
  • reduce severity of asthma attacks
  • reduce swelling
  • relieve muscle swelling
  • aid in relaxation
  • reduce body odors
  • regrow hair
Really! And there is more, much more. Click on the link to read and learn about red clover and rosemary.

This post linked to ABC Wednesday. This week we are honoring "R" - you know the letter Toys R Us always sports written backwards!  :-) Please join.

Help the smoker in your life

Blu Cigs

to read more >>>>

I have been dedicated to better health since before the birth of my first child, and I now have 30 grands and 6 great grands  so you can see that health is and has been extremely important to me and should be to you. If you are trying to attain a long life, shouldn't it be a healthy one? Our families mean so much to us and living a robust and healthy life makes our time with them so much better.

While baby girl waited for her last child to be born she not only cut way back on smoking but actually kicked the habit. I was ecstatic! Then when her husband did the same I was doing the happy dance.  It takes so very little time to pick up this oppressing habit but so much longer time and effort to quit it. I have written the following articles on this blog alone about cigarette smoking:

Attack the Smoke not the Smoker   on March 30, 2011

Third Hand Smoke and our Babies on  December 27, 2011

When trying to help my (adult) children kick the habit I was forever looking for tools to help them and recently found an offer online for electronic cigarettes. While my choice would be for no one to ever start the habit; it happens and sometimes one needs help to quit. In my humble opinion electronic cigarettes would be a helpful  step in shedding the habit for a number of reasons; one of the main reasons is that with it  the smell of cigarettes is a thing of the past. This limits the harmful effect on friend's and family members of the smoker.

Who wants to smell like an ash tray?

I have spoken to a number of ex-smokers who once they no longer smoked absolutely detested the odor associated with cigarette smoke.  Blu Cigs make the transition easier for those who are struggling and need just a little more help. They also have far fewer harmful chemicals to negatively impact one's health.

Currently Blu Cigs is running 4 specials including:
  1. $5 off all orders site wide + free  shipping (copy code from their site);
  2. Free FedEx shipping on all orders (get coupon at their site)
  3. Free shipping on all orders (get coupon at their site)
  4. Blu rewards for referrals
If you are searching for a method to help you quit, why not give this a try? Quitting isn't easy, but you are worth the effort!

Thank you for your visit. Take care, stay healthy and God bless!!

A Pint of Prevention - A Pound of Cure

Many of us grew up eating dandelion greens but more of us grew up referring to them as weeds and practiced methods of getting them out of our yards. God gives us wonderful gifts but we do not understand their worth. Dandelions are high in lecithin
