Thankful Thursday - Good Character

I worked in retail for about ten years. Most of it was in management and part of working management consists in customer care, balancing the cash, maintaining inventory, keeping inventory losses at a minimum and depositing the sales in the bank. Two of the companies I worked for were in poor neighborhoods and had very heavy losses from shoplifting. Our corporate office tied our hands on many levels in preventing these thefts, but still sent in loss prevention teams from time to time to interview staff. A few times I was actually assaulted by shop lifters who were caught in the act, and corporate refused to prosecute. Loss prevention has a conception that losses are mainly internal. While this could be true generally, at both these locations it was not.

We (management members) watched films and listened to seminars advising how easy it is for a trusted individual to suddenly become a thief. In fact in our neighborhood a young manager at a fast food restaurant was sent to prison for stealing a deposit. A year later the bank found the lost deposit wedged in their drop and the man was released from prison and consequently sued. We never lost a deposit, but if we had, how long will a couple thousand last? It wouldn't even pay for a good attorney! Will a few dollars replace the harm the deed caused?

While being interviewed one on one with the head of loss prevention, I was told adamantly by this man that everyone is a thief. The only difference he said in who and who isn't  is in the "window of opportunity". I was just as adamant in my opinion  that not everyone would throw away their good character over a few dollars. I told the man that my children may not inherit a lot of worldly goods from me, but they must live with whatever reputation I have. I could not leave this earth knowing I left a bad name for my children to try to clean up! Now my children's friends recognize me as someone that waited on them at either the doctor's office or the different places I worked. I even taught some of their children in headstart and have them run to give me a hug. They were good experiences.

Sorry, for going on and on. This is a tender subject for me, as our entire staff was fired on inventory day because of a poor inventory. I went out and found another management position within the week with their competitor, but left retail as soon as I could find a suitable position in another line of work.

1. How do you feel about shopping somewhere and paying more because of inventory losses due to shoplifting when the store refuses to prosecute?

2. Do you believe everyone is a potential thief?

Sister Tells Me

Thank you Elias for this guest post:

Author: Elias Massey

My sister keeps talking to me about texas electricity providers because she knows we’re having a hard time since Mark left his old job. I wish it hadn’t been such a load on me but since I’m the sole breadwinner now it’s hard for me to realize how much pressure there was on him to bring home enough money. Now I get it. We’ve been cutting back wherever we can but it’s been more trouble than you would think and I need to make sure we’ve got enough in savings at all times that in case something happened like someone getting hurt we would be able to do what we needed to do. Downsizing your life isn’t easy but you know, it’s totally worth it at the end of the day when you feel like you’ve got your finances under control and that you’re able to take care of your family. Who would have imagined we would be here at this point – I finally feel like we’re back on our feet which is a great feeling!

Blood Oranges and your Health

I love trying out new foods and then of course researching and writing about them. If you (like me) are curious about this fruit, you can read more at  Blood Oranges: A Beautiful Twist on an Old Standby. Did you know that one orange has in excess of 170 different phytonutrients and boasts more than 60 flavonoids? Because the flesh of this orange is red there are more interesting things to learn about them.

Thank you for visiting me today. Take care, stay healthy and God bless.

Water Lovers Unite!

I took swimming lessons as a child but never learned to swim. This is Michigan, the "water wonderland" a state of boats, surfing, fishing, swimming, water skiing and wetsuits. Living in this state practically mandates that one know how to swim. This is my son with two of his children, my grandchildren, and of course they know how to swim. Grandma, mom (me) was sitting on the side with feet dangling in the water. :-)

Both my sons took to water like ducks. From the time they could sit up in the bath tub, the water became their new play ground. They could not be left alone in the water as they had no fear. They would totally immerse themselves and gave me many frightening moments, until thankfully, they were swimming; no lessons needed. They say that infants are natural swimmers so we should encourage the love of water at a young age.

Thankful Thursday - Music

My mother was quite musical. As a child she had voice lessons and also had been taught to play clarinet, piano, and guitar. My sister and I were encouraged by our school to take lessons but our father thought it to be a frivolous pursuit so he told the school that we were not interested.

Mother often sang with us and taught us to harmonize. I found that even the saddest of days could be turned around with a song. I wished I had learned to read notes. When I was in grade school and sent in a poem to Crown Music Company in NY, we received it back set to music and Mom played it. We sang it.

At that moment I felt like great things were possible. Father was a naysayer but Mom was an encourager. She always thought her girls could go anywhere they put their minds to. Isn't a song like that? It encourages and uplifts. It takes people across all lines and unites them in song.

Does music improve your mood?

Do you sing with your family?
